Gum Infection Therapy
Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the gum tissue and bone that affects the teeth and supporting bone in your mouth. Calculus, which is made up of plaque, bacteria, acids and food particles, contributes to the development of recession and bone loss. However, gum disease is caused by many factors, such as bacteria, build-up, nutrition, genetics, diabetes, smoking, and poor oral hygiene. If your parents or grandparents have lost their teeth, the chances are that it was due to periodontitis. Periodontitis is common, but can often go unnoticed, as there are often no symptoms of pain. Symptoms can range from bad breath, yellow, brown or black stains, stone-like build-ups in between teeth, bleeding and red gums, oozing of pus, mobile teeth and pain. If you have any of these symptoms, please come in for a checkup so we can prevent further loss of gum, bone and teeth.
Scaling and root planing (gum infection therapy), also known as a deep cleaning, is vital in removing tenacious build-up and bacteria, so that the gum and bone can properly heal. Once this is completed comfortably, under anesthesia and sedation if necessary, then only regular cleanings are needed to maintain your teeth for a lifetime.
Gum disease is one of the first stages, so don’t put it off to the side because you feel no pain. The quicker you attack the problem the sooner you’ll get that smile you’ve always dreamed of.
