Bone Grafting/Socket Preservation
A bone graft is used to recreate the bone and soft supporting tissues lost due to gum disease. This procedure is also called regenerative surgery. Regenerative surgery is a treatment for gum disease, also called periodontitis. People with periodontitis lose gum coverage and bone support around their teeth so regenerative surgery regrows these lost tissues. Before your surgery, you need to undergo a basic periodontal treatment, called gum infection therapy (scaling and root planing), or better known as a deep cleaning.
The goal of this surgery is to rebuild bone that was lost. The roots will be thoroughly cleaned and the defects in the bone will be filled in with bone graft material. Then they will be covered with a physical barrier.
When teeth need to be replaced with an implant due to a fracture, we might need to place a bone graft to keep the width of the bone intact, which is necessary to provide proper strength for the implant. This is a great procedure to keep your bone intact and ready for an implant, if you choose to do so.
